Azavea develops innovative, web-based software that uses mapping and geographic data technologies to solve complex, interesting, and novel problems. We serve a broad range of clients including governments, non-profit organizations, universities, and businesses. We have particular expertise in natural resource planning, elections, economic development, crime analysis, real estate property analysis, and cultural resources, but are engaged in a wide range of other interesting projects. Our lead web designer will be taking a leave of absence from August to mid-November, and we are looking to both temporarily fill this position as well as develop a relationship with someone that might turn into additional, part-time work beyond the mid-November time frame. We’d love to work with someone who can turn our thoughts into reality in designs that are friendly and inviting, yet elegant, contemporary and fresh.
You will work with two types of teams. First, you will work closely with Azavea’s software development teams to design, skin and create user interfaces for our web-based software applications. Second, you will collaborate with the marketing staff to design marketing collateral, web landing pages, and maintain our product websites.
This position requires both excellent design skills and a working knowledge of HTML, XHTML, CSS and Javascript; experience working within a content management system; and knowledge of web-based software user interface design.
Job Description:
3-4 month, full-time position. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Design and construct web pages, web applications, and navigation elements, generally incorporating dynamic content and interface controls
- Maintain Azavea’s product web sites (created in DotNetNuke)
- Maintain Azavea’s main web site (created in Concrete5)
- HTML, CSS and graphic design and skinning of new web applications’ features
- Design marketing collateral (flyers, ads, pamphlets, etc.) as needed
Skills:
- Excellent knowledge of standards-based XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Excellent knowledge of graphic design software: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, (Flash desirable, but not a must)
- Knowledge of interface design for web applications
- Knowledge of interface and UX design for web applications
- Exposure to scripting languages (.NET and PHP)
- Knowledge of the DotNetNuke and Concrete5 frameworks (desirable, but not a must)
- Attention to detail
- Work autonomously as well as with a group
- 1-3 years of applicable experience
