Filmmaker Gary Hustwit, director of "Helvetica", is back with a new documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves? The film features Jonathan Ive, Marc Newson, Karim Rashid, Hella Jongerius, and many more. Gary Hustwit will be in attendance to present the film and answer questions after each screening.

WHERE: Stein Auditorium - Nesbitt Hall
33rd and Market Streets
Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA 19104

On the night of February 19, Ms. Takagi will demonstrate how she transforms the Japanese letterform into expressive gesture.

Chukin Takagi was born in 1945 in Karafuto, Russia, a former colony of Japan. She then grew up in Hirosaki, a northern city of Honshu, the largest island of Japan. At a very young age, she commenced her study of Shodo [A Way of Scripting; Sho means "writing or scripting with brush" and do means "the path, passage or the way"] in a private practice run by a local writing master. She continued her Shodo discipline seriously through high school and college with two different masters. Between 1965 and 1974, she made multiple exhibit entries and became independent, starting to teach her own pupils. In the late 70s, she won the prestigious award of the Aomori province for the third time. She holds her graduate degree in Shodo from the Japanese Shodo Education Association in Tokyo and has received guidance in additional brushwork explorations from Sodo Asai in Kyoto. Ms. Takagi was one of the organizers of the first alumni show of the Association in 1988, which took place in Tokyo. Ms. Takagi was appointed as a director of the northern Shodo Institute in Hirosaki in 2006.

There will be an introduction and brief history of Japanese calligraphy by Janice Merendino, founder and director of The Branch Out Project.

Janice Merendino earned her BS in Art Education and BFA in Ceramics from Moore College of Art and Design. She was one of the founding members of The Clay Studio and taught there as a ceramics instructor until 1984. Currently, she teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs at Rosemont College. At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, she designs workshops and teaches accessible programs geared toward groups from various mental and physical health communities. She is founder and director of The Branch Out Project, through which she conducts visual literacy workshops for major corporations, government agencies and numerous community and non-profit groups. Ms. Merendino has made six trips to Japan to pursue her studies of pottery and ink painting. Since 1980, she has exhibited her paintings on paper and ceramic work in several group and solo shows, including a one-woman exhibition in Tokyo.

The exhibition will be held in the Pearlstein Gallery right off the lobby entrance to Nesbitt Hall.

HOW MUCH: FREE and open to the public.

Philadelphia Region's Third Annual Design Slam

Contestants will participate in a fast-paced race to create the best design solution to a "made-up" real-world problem. Awards given to the victors!

WHEN: Friday, January 16, 2009 | 6:30pm to 8:30pm (meet and greet from 6 - 6:30)
WHERE: Messagefirst, 230 N 2nd Street, Suite 2C
DIRECTIONS: Messagefirst

What's a "Design Slam"?
During the meeting, participants will be teamed and introduced to a full-fledged hypothetical project, including appropriate client-side deliverables. They'll then have an opportunity to interview key players on the client's team. The session will conclude with proposal presentations from each of the groups to the "clients" and the assembled audience.

Then the "clients" team will choose a winner. Members of the winning team will receive a plethora of praise from your peers and an award.

If you do not want to participate because you won't be able to get to the meeting ontime or a have severe case of social phobia, fear not! We would like to have an audience during this session to play the role of users, and help choose the winning team.
