User-Centered Design: Keeping It Real

Join us as our panelists discuss why great design isn???t just about design. It???s about people.

DATE: Wednesday, October 22, 2008
WHERE: Huntsman Hall, University of Pennsylvania
Huntsman Hall, Room 255
University of Pennsylvania
3730 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104

ABOUT THE DISCUSSION
As design professionals, we strive to create great products and great experiences, both physical and virtual, for the general public or niche markets. But many times???the cynic would say most of the time???we miss the mark. The world is full of things that are difficult and frustrating to use. And that???s because designers make assumptions about how users think and do things.

Great design is user-centric design.

User-centered design (UCD) is an approach that places the user at the center of the design process from the beginning. By understanding real people???s needs and behaviors during the conception and refinement of a design, we can ensure that a new product succeeds.

This discussion will include perspectives on user-centered design from professionals who create experiences in the fields of architecture, interactive design, and product design. Each panelist will present examples and strategies relevant to practitioners of user-centric design in any discipline.

Those interested in architecture, graphic design, human factors, information architecture, interaction design, product design, usability, and user experience will find the discussion highly informative and challenging.

World Usability Day

World Usability Day was founded to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use. Last year, 40,000 people in 35 countries in 175 cities around the world participated in World Usability Day. The second World Usability Day event in Philadelphia at GSI Commerce drew over 100 people to hear talks by Hal Rosenbluth of Take Care Health Systems, James E. Mitchell of Drexel University, and Stephen B. Wilcox of Design Science on User Experience Beyond The Web.
The focus for World Usability Day 2007, to be held November 8, 2007, is healthcare. Whether it's new medical devices or technologies; drug research, approval, or delivery; patient forms or medical record sharing; emergency disaster planning; increasing the functionality of hospitals; or everyday healthcare delivery, EVERYONE is affected by usability in healthcare.

Mississippi 1964

Photographs by Joel Katz

Partial excerpt from the Artist's Statement: I went to Mississippi in the summer of 1964, "Freedom Summer," to gather images and experiences for my Scholars of the House senior year project at Yale, a book of writing and photographs eventually titled And I Said No Lord. I was 21, naive, immortal like most 21-year-olds, and - thinking I could combine the spontaneous vision of Robert Frank with the image quality of Walker Evans (later the project's mentor at Yale) - apparently vain. I arrived by Greyhound in Jackson the day after Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner "disappeared" and left the morning after their bodies were discovered in a shallow grave near Philadelphia [Mississippi], tragic and ironic bookmarks of my visit.

PhillyCHI | UPAPA Joint Meeting - Jared Spool

The Brave New World: Usability Challenges of Web 2.0

Once again, everything is exciting. The advent of social networks, APIs, mashups, RSS, aggregators, and folksonomies promise a world where the information and services we've always wanted are delivered right to our browser.

However, delivering on the promise is easier said than done. Moving from a great concept to an exceptional user experience proves to be more of a challenge than many people thought. What works on a small scale is a very different story, when put into production.

As Spiderman's Uncle Ben pointed out," with great power comes great responsibility. "Just because we can do all these things doesn't mean we should do them. In the early 1980's, the cheap availability of laser printers and digital fonts produced a plethora of documents that more resembled ransom notes than professional publications. We could easily imagine designers going wild with the capabilities of this new technology and not using the restraint necessary to ensure they produce an optimal experience.

In this entertaining and informative presentation, Jared will show examples of the usability challenges we face as the web continues to change and evolve. He will discuss the implications of "The Long Tail", the introduction of a mashup mentality in business environments, and how basic techniques, such as usability testing and field studies, change when social network is at the center of the design.

About Jared Spool, Founding Principal, UIE
If you have ever seen Jared speak about usability, you know that he is probably the most effective, knowledgeable communicator on the subject today. What you probably don't know is that he has guided the research agenda and built User Interface Engineering into the largest research organization of its kind in the world. Hehas been working in the field of usability and design since 1978, before the term 'usability' was ever associated with computers.

Jared spends his time working with the research teams at the company, helps clients understand how to solve their design problems, explains to reporters and industry analysts what the current state of design is all about, and is a top-rated speaker at more than 20 conferences every year. He is also the conference chair and keynote speaker at the annual User Interface Conference, is on the faculty of the Tufts University Gordon Institute, and manages to squeeze in a fair amount of writing time.

About User Interface Engineering (UIE) User Interface Engineering is a leading research company, specializing in helping design professionals produce delightful and enticing user experiences. They work with all of the top organizations in the technology space and help thousands of designers every year. Hosting events, such as the annual User Interface Conference and the brand new Web App Summit, UIE continues to push the envelope of new design practices and techniques.
