The A Day in the Life Conference is an exclusive design event to be held in Baltimore, Maryland, at the Brown Center in the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The A Day in the Life Conference was established to give design professionals and students within the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area an opportunity to come together in a cohesive environment in order to focus on the advances and challenges of the design profession and network with fellow creative professionals.

This unique event will break into small group sessions to hear presentations and actively discuss important topics such as The Business of Design, The Art of Branding, The Green Movement & The Creative Industry and more. We're featuring guest speakers including Ellen Lupton (curator of contemporary design), Jill Tanenbaum (President and Creative Director of Jill Tanenbaum Graphic Design & Advertising Inc.), Brian Hock (award winning designer and co-owner of DesignID) and more.

The sole purpose of the conference is to rejuvenate the creative spirit in the design profession, foster an environment for networking, and offer opportunities for learning. Philagrafika 2010 The Graphic Unconscious Philagrafika 2010 The Graphic Unconscious

Philagrafika 2010

The Graphic Unconscious at Moore College of Art & Design

All Philagrafika Events & more info: http://www.philagrafika.org/

The Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design are one of five venues presenting The Graphic Unconscious, the core exhibition of Philagrafika 2010, Philadelphia's international festival celebrating the print in contemporary art. Set to be one of the largest arts events in the United States, Philagrafika 2010 will showcase the work of more than 300 artists and will unite 88 Philadelphia art institutions. Exhibitions are on view from January 29 through April 11, 2010.

The Graphic Unconscious explores the ubiquitous presence of printed matter in our visual culture, exposing the print component in sculptural, environmental, performance, pictorial and video works, and highlighting their relevance to contemporary art and society. It includes works by 35 artists from 18 countries on display across five venues: Moore College of Art & Design; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Print Center; and Temple Gallery, Tyler School of Art, Temple University.

The projects on view at Moore highlight artists who employ printmaking in patterning and ornamentation of their work, drawing upon the college’s 160-year-long tradition of focus on the fine and applied arts of textile design, graphic design, interior architecture and fashion. The artists on view—Gunilla Klingberg, Virgil Marti, Paul Morrison, Betsabeé Romero, and Regina Silveira—have created new works or reimagined existing pieces intermingling media and disciplines. Their processes reflect the renewed interest in the creative potential of printmaking strategies traditionally used for patterning, wallpaper, and fabrics when applied to contemporary artistic practice.

The exhibition is organized by the Philagrafika 2010 artistic director José Roca and the curatorial team: John Caperton, Curator of Prints and Photographs at the Print Center; Sheryl Conkelton, independent curator; Shelley Langdale, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Lorie Mertes, Director/Chief Curator of The Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design; and Julien Robson, Curator of Contemporary Art at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

PhillyCHI Fourth Annual Design Slam

PhillyCHI

Fourth Annual Design Slam

WHERE: Messagefirst – 230 N 2nd Street, Suite 2C, Philadelphia, PA 19106 (under the Ben Franklin Bridge)

PARKING: Parking Info: http://www.philapark.org/parkinglocator/parking_locator.aspx (Moderately priced parking is available in a garage located directly across 2nd Street from Messagefirst)

(We'll have our opening announcements starting at 6pm, and the competition will start promptly at 6:30, so please come early)

RSVP: Eventbrite: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/520484784 Space is limited and RSVP is required. Registration will be closed once the event is full. Please register now.

Please join us for the Philadelphia region's fourth annual Design Slam. Contestants will participate in a fast-paced race to create the best design solution to a "made-up" real-world problem. Awards will be given to the victors!

What's a "design slam"?

During the meeting, participants will be teamed and introduced to a full-fledged hypothetical project, including appropriate client-side deliverables. They'll then have an opportunity to interview key players on the client's team. The session will conclude with proposal presentations from each of the groups to the "clients" and the assembled audience.

Then the "clients" team will choose a winner. Members of the winning team will receive a plethora of praise from your peers and an award.

What's in it for me?

This is a chance for interested IAs, designers, usability practitioners, developers and marketing professionals to get their hands dirty working side by side with colleagues as they tackle tough business problems in a fun and sometimes crazy environment. Knowledge transfer, technique sharing, and a social atmosphere makes this session stand out from the garden-variety "Lecture-and-PowerPoint" presentation.

Please try to arrive on time. We'll have our opening announcements starting at 6pm, and the client team will introduce the design challenge promptly at 6:30pm.

If you do not want to participate because you won't be able to get to the meeting on time or a have severe case of social phobia, fear not! We would like to have an audience during this session to play the role of users, and help choose the winning team.

This idea is shamelessly stolen (with permission) from the IA Summit's IA Slam.

For more information about the IA Slam, please visit: http://designgames.com.au/design_slam/
